The batter doesn't swing the ball that he sees. He swings to the ball that he projects.
The ball is too far away from the batter by the time he decides to swing. So, a batter needs to recognize the pitch type, calculate and project its trajectory in order to start placing the barrel where he thinks the ball is going to be at the time of it "crossing his contact zone". This has to happen in this specific order. Changing the order and timing of this sequence alters negatively the probability of making contact.
This is a stimulus-response sequence, which response, should always be conscious.
A mistake recognizing, calculating, projecting or making decisions may impact player hitting ability.
It is important to train Pitch Recognizing, Calculating and projecting the trajectory of the pitch and decision making. These can be trained off the field.
